Terry Hunter recommend free streaming movies on KANOPY and HIFF.ORG

All you need is a Hawaii public library card to access some 30,000 titles on Kanopy, a streaming service that offers commercial-free films and TV shows that you rarely can find anywhere else. You can sign up for Kanopy online at (https://www.librarieshawaii.org/2020/04/03/looking-for-a-good-movie-to-stream-try-kanopy-from-your-hawaii-state-public-library-system/). You’ll be asked for your library card number plus its pin number which is usually the last four digits of your phone number. Then you’re prompted to create a Kanopy account with your email address and a password that you choose. If you want to stream movies on your TV set, just add the Kanopy channel to your streaming player and log in with your internet account. (Click “Log In” not “Get Started.”) You’ll find a large variety of choices from classic films to documentaries to Oscar winners to foreign films and even kids’ films. For now, all this is available for April only, so be sure to fill out the library’s feedback form to help ensure that it continues. If you like watching short films, the Hawaii International Film Festival website (https://hiff.org/hiff-at-home/) is streaming 14 popular titles shown at the festival during this past decade. The free films come from all over Asia and the Pacific including three from Hawaii. All these well made films are worth seeing but my favorites include AREOLA BOREALIS, a hilarious comedy from Singapore about an uptight mother whose daughter’s bra breaks right before her wedding reception. For me the most touching film is TSUYAKO set mostly in 1952 when a young Japanese factory worker and mother is caught between her family’s demands and her love for a woman who is moving away. TAMA TU is a great 2005 short film from Taika Waititi, the director of 2019’s JO JO RABBIT. A squad of Maori troops spends one night in a bombed out house. As war wages outside they must stay silent and amuse themselves any way they can. I also admired MAUKA TO MAKAI, an intense, beautifully shot drama about two Kaneohe cousins, one of whom is addicted to the hard drugs he sells.
