Terry Hunter reviews 1917

The new movie,1917, has already won the Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic film and has earned ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. It certainly deserves those honors. This is a stunning movie about two young soldiers on a nearly impossible mission during World War I. The pair are in constant peril for the whole film which was shot by 2017 Oscar winner Roger Deakins to look like one continuous shot in real time. That technique immerses the audience in a dangerous mission full of blood and destruction, gunfire and explosions, plus lots of mud and even rat infestations. It’s the most powerful war drama I’ve seen since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN two decades ago.
