THE FAREWELL is the latest American movie to feature all Asian cast. And It’s directed by a Chinese-American filmmaker. I like the story it tells—better than the film itself. The movie focuses on Billi, young woman who was born in China but raised in America. When Billi’s family learns that her grandmother in China has terminal cancer, they decide not to tell the elderly woman. And the Americanized Billi is the only family member who objects. This interesting situation is based on real events in the life of its director, Lulu Wang, and although I expected to really enjoy her film, I am in the small minority of people who think it’s too slow and too long.
