Job Swap: Dash attempts noodle-making

KALIHI (KHNL) - With the summer games taking place in Beijing, I thought it would be appropriate to explore the Chinese culture in this edition of "Job Swap."

An what better way, than through food.

"Hey Dash, welcome to Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory," said Marie Soon.  "We're going to make some noodles. We have your hat right here and your apron."

And with that I was ready to roll. Fortunately family tradition meets modern technology here, in the form of a mega mixer.

First step, add the flour.

"So next we gonna drop in the liquids. That's an egg, water and salt mixture".

A push of the button and were on our way.

After about nine minutes of mixing the product is flattened, rolled up and loaded onto the next series of machines.

Here it is flattened a couple more times, before ultimately emerging as oodles of noodles.

The Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory makes more than a dozen types of noodles and wraps.

These chow mein noodles, about a ton every day, will wind up in restaurants and markets around the state.

"Okay now that we've made our noodles, were going to make maunapua. So first we're going to grab our dough".

At the company's second location in Aiea, the manapua is king. Sure handed workers here stuff, roll up and prepare thousands of the treats everyday.

All of them, hopefully looking pretty much the same.

"And this is the tough part. You kinda stuff it and close it up. Oh wow you're way ahead of me. Have you done this before?"

From charsiu to four types of chicken to sweet potato, the crew here rolls out more than dozen different variety's.

And remember what I said about all manapua hopefully looking the same.

"Okay so here's the ones we made earlier. Guess which one's yours? Let me guess, the big ugly one. No, every manapua is beautiful, and hot too. Ouch!"

And that old adage holds true here, if you can't stand the heat...

"That's it I quit...ha-ha-ha".
