Top Stories of 2006
By: Darren Pai
(KHNL) - Instead of just deciding for ourselves, we decided to ask our viewers to decide the year's top stories. Based upon votes collected on our website KHNL.com, it seems 2006 was the year of the natural disaster here in Hawaii.
More than half our voters said the October earthquake off the Big Island was the top story of 2006. On the Big Island, damaged classrooms forced schools to shut down. Rubble and highway damage plagued drivers trying to get around.
Power outages followed. In honolulu, airline passengers waited for hours as the blackout completely shut down air traffic.
Voters named the failure of a dam on Kauai as the number two story of 2006.
In March, the Kaloko dam collapsed. Seven people died in the ensuing flash flood.
March's heavy rains on Oahu came in third. Some residents were forced to evacuate when muddy water entered their homes. Flood damage also forced some businesses to temporarily shut down.
Other stories receiving votes included the gridlock created when a pedestrian overpass in Aiea was damaged and the success of the University of Hawaii Warrior football team.
The top ten stories for 2006 that viewers voted for them on KHNL.com are as follows:
