Huge Brush Fire on Maui

MA'ALAEA, Maui (KHNL) The Maui Fire Department is battling a huge brush fire between Ma'alaea and Olowalu. So far the fire has burned nearly 18-hundred acres.

The area is described as brush land and no homes are threatened. Throughout the day Friday the fire has worked its way up the West Maui Mountains.

At one point it surrounded the wind farm and swept down towards the highway at Olowalu. The Hawaiian Air National Guard is sending support. Honoapiilani highway is closed to all traffic

Drivers have been advised to stay away from the area. The Kahekili highway, through Kahakuloa, is closed to inbound traffic heading in the Lahaina direction.
