(KHNL) The Oahu man who contracted massive bacterial infections has died. The Honolulu Medical Examiner says Oliver Johnson died at about 9:15pm Thursday night.

The 34-year old fell into the polluted waters of the Ala Wai boat harbor last Friday night. Homicide detectives are now looking into several variations of the story of how johnson ended up in the contaminated waters.

The health department says Johnson contracted several serious bacterial infections. Officials also say there is no direct link between Johnson's condition and the harbor waters.

Friends say as a surfer he loved the ocean so they have trouble accepting the way their friend died.

"I'm sad because regardless of what people say, I believe the water killed him," said friend Stefany Sofos.

The city diverted 48 million gallons of untreated sewage into the ala wai canal after a sewer main failed.

The city medical examiner listed Johnson's cause of death as organ failure due to bacterial infection.

It's still not clear how he wound up in the water.

The medical examiner also says his remains showed foot injuries infected with bacteria which lead to septic shock and organ failures throughout his body.

The cause of those injuries remain under investigation.

"Oliver Johnson was a great guy. He was a wonderful friend. And I'll miss him," said Sofos.
