MAKUA BEACH, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An army of volunteers helped pull off the biggest beach cleanup in Makua history.
More than 700 people spent two days removing more than 14,000 pounds of debris from the Leeward Oahu beach and valley.
Organizers with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii say it's a record for Makua Beach.
"When you really think about it, clean beaches start at home. We are hoping to inspire people to use less so that less waste is created so you don't need to illegally dump it and it doesn't end up in the oceans," cleanup organizer Kahi Pacarro said.
The cleanup coincided with a celebration marking 15 years since the end of live fire military exercises in Makua Valley.
