Big Island suspects await trial for brutal midnight assault of hotel security guard

KEALAKEKUA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man remains in critical condition Thursday after a brutal midnight assault at the Kona Seaside Hotel.

Early Monday morning, John Kanui, a Kona Seaside Hotel security guard, was called to respond to a noise complaint in the hotel's parking lot.

Kanui was speaking with four people in a black SUV when police say the conversation escalated and three of the SUV passengers proceeded to repeatedly punch and kick Kanui on the ground.

They allegedly continued to assault him even after he was unconscious.

Kona Patrol officers responded to the scene and arrested the four passengers in the SUV.

Three were charged Tuesday with second-degree attempted murder and were identified as Wesley Samoa, Lama Lauvao, Natisha Tautalatasi.

Kanui, who is in his 60s, was flown to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

A preliminary hearing for the suspects has been scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m.
