HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A North Texas woman's dream honeymoon in Hawaii turned into a nightmare earlier this month after she broke her neck in a freak boogie boarding accident.

Friends say Nikki and Will Lewis got married on Maui on Sept. 8.

Just a few days later, Nikki Lewis was at the beach with her husband and friends and in the water when a wave crashed on top of her.

She broke her neck, friends said, and was rushed to a hospital.

She's since been transferred to Honolulu, where she continues to undergo care.

Friends have set up GoFundMe and Facebook pages for her to help her cover medical bills and transport back to Texas.

"Nikki is a mom to two beautiful children and a new stepmom to one. Her fairy tale wedding trip has turned into a horrible nightmare for herself, her new husband, their children and families," friends said, on her GoFundMe page.

"The medical bills are growing each day and will be unimaginably extensive very quickly."
