KAKAAKO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire at a Kakaako highrise on Wednesday.

The fire started about 5 p.m. in a unit on the 28th floor. It was extinguished shortly after firefighters arrived on scene.

Residents said they were evacuating, and that the alarms in the building had gone off.

HFD says the building's fire sprinkler system was crucial in containing the fire.

"So the sprinklers acted like they should. They extinguished the fire on the balcony itself," Batt. Chief John Bowers of HFD said.

"It helps — whether it totally extinguishes the fire or it keeps damage at minimum by the time they get there," he added.

The fire triggered a brief closure of Kapiolani Boulevard in the area. All roads in the area are back open.

A cause and damage estimates are not yet available.
