After 2 months of repairs, popular Windward Oahu trail to reopen

LANIKAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The wait is almost over!
After two months, the popular Lanikai Pillbox trail is set to reopen on Monday.
The popular trail was closed in June so that crews could make repairs to the historical World War II-era structures along the hike.
Safety concerns had been raised since the structures had been deteriorating over time.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said work — which consisted of concrete spall repairs and the replacement of rusted steel roof supports — is almost done. Crews just have to make the finishing touches this weekend. Hikers are reminded to stay off the trail until work is completed.
The repairs — which cost nearly $250,000 — will help prevent the structures from further weathering.
But the work isn't over yet.
The state says later next month, the trail will be closed once again for at least a day so that crews can work to remove debris from the trail's end.
Officials are also looking into removing graffiti at the observation stations.
