Family mourns after 2-year-old Ewa Beach boy dies in California crash
FRESNO, CALIFORNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 2-year-old Ewa Beach boy has died after a semi-trailer collided with his family's SUV while they were on a trip to California.
The crash happened Wednesday afternoon on a two-lane highway in Fresno, where Bryson and Kristi Murata Rivera were traveling to watch their oldest son play in a baseball tournament.
Kristi Rivera's auntie says Bryson Rivera was trying to avoid a collision.
"The reason why he went left is because the semi was coming towards him, and he wanted to avoid it.," said Rose-Anne Schuct. "So of course he went left to avoid the semi, and somehow the semi pulled back in his lane and ended up hitting them in the worst way."
The impact took the life of the baby of the family — 2-year-old Liam, who was in the passenger side back seat.
Family members say he was too young to go.
"We can't take it in," said Schuct. "It's really hard for us. Because he's so young. Kind of sad, because why wasn't he given a second chance?"
Kristi was also sitting on the passenger side and is in the intensive care unit of a Fresno hospital, but is expected to survive. She is now breathing on her own, and is scheduled to have surgery on her arm on Monday.
Bryson and his middle son, Kaleb, suffered minor injuries. The oldest boy, Jayden, was in a different vehicle with his baseball teammates.
Family members are mourning Liam and praying for Kristi, but are also concerned for Bryson.
"I just told him, you know, it's an unfortunate accident, and you know how he feels responsible and whatever, and I told him you can't blame yourself," said Schuct.
Schuct has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for unexpected expenses from the crash, including medical and funeral costs.
"What else can we do? An accident happened."
