KAPAHULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One lucky Oahu shopper is now a millionaire.
Tiana M. is a loyal Safeway customer and a die-hard Monopoly fan.
Her luck and loyalty paid off this weekend after she was announced the winner of the Monopoly Collect & Win Game at Safeway Kapahulu. Her grand prize: $1 million.
"I just feel like this is so amazing and unbelievable," Tiana said. "I was really hopeful. There was a day I came four times. I shopped here during my lunch break, after lunch, and I went home and came back and then I came back again. I was just so hopeful I can't believe it paid off."
Tiana won the contest by collecting Monopoly pieces through her purchases at Safeway. While playing the game, she entered dozens of online codes from her collected game tickets. One of those codes was randomly selected in the Last Chance drawing and earned her the top prize, the company said in a news release.
At first, she couldn't believe it.
"I really thought it was a scam," she said. "I just feel so blessed. I can't believe that I won out of all people in all places, here in Hawaii."
George Glukfeld, Safeway's Hawaii district manager, presented the large check to Tiana and her family at the Kapahulu location Sunday afternoon. Click here to view the ceremony.
As for how she plans to spend the money...
"I've got everything I need. I don't need to spend any money on myself. I just want to be smart with it. I want to put it away. Some for my savings, some for my daughter's future, some hopefully to buy a house."
She said she may also take her family on a vacation as a way of saying thank you for always being there for her.
Tiana is the first-ever Hawaii Safeway shopper to win the grand prize through the game, organized by Albertsons Companies.
