Popular nationwide chain could soon fill void left by Sports Authority's departure
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It looks like athletes and outdoor recreationists in Hawaii may soon be getting a replacement for the Sports Authority stores that closed nearly two years ago.
Dick's Sporting Goods, the popular sportswear chain headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, registered recently with the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs – an indication that the retailer may be eyeing a new location in Hawaii.
There's no word yet on where the store might be, or when it might open.
The Fortune 500 company, which has more than 600 stores on the mainland, already sells University of Hawaii merchandise on it's website.
Dick's would be the first big-box sports retailer in Hawaii since Sports Authority closed its eight stores in 2016.
