PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A warning to drone pilots: You could face a large fine if you fly your drone near the Kilauea volcano.
The recent eruptions have set the scene for some spectacular photographs, but the Federal Aviation Administration says drones and other aircraft could interfere with emergency operations.
The FAA says only aircraft under the direction of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency are authorized in the restriction zone, which includes most of lower Puna.
Temporary flight restrictions are defined as a certain area of airspace where air travel is limited due to a temporary hazardous condition – which, in this case, is the increased volcanic activity at Kilauea.
