HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Students at Kaiser High School are having to adjust their workouts after heavy rains earlier in the month flooded the school's weight room.

The weight room is currently off-limits to students after rainwater flooded the facility on April 13, soaking the rubber mats covering the floor. An environmental specialist with the department of Education determined that the room isn't safe for use by staff or students.

"We occasionally have to hire professional cleaners to come in and take of a situation like that," said Dann Carlson, deputy superintendent of DOE Facilities. "This is one of those situations. If there's any sign of mold then obviously we're going to do what need to do to take care of that to make sure the kids are safe."

The DOE will meet with parents of Kaiser high students on Monday to discuss the timeline for the cleanup.
