HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Big Island Mayor Harry Kim was checked out of the hospital on Saturday after undergoing procedures at The Queen's Medical Center.

Kim was discharged from the hospital on Friday night and stayed with his wife in Honolulu over the weekend. Kim is returning home to Hilo on Sunday, according to Hawaii County officials.

Kim was medevaced to Oahu after experiencing chest pains on Thursday. County officials said he drove himself to the Hilo Medical Center around 4:30 a.m. after feeling unwell.

The 78-year-old has suffered three heart attacks over the past several years. He also underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2008.

"We appreciate everyone giving Harry a chance to rest comfortably while he was in the hospital, and we're hoping that the community will let Harry take time to rest and recover fully," said Managing Director Wil Okabe, who will serve as acting mayor while Kim is out on sick leave.

"We thank Hilo Medical and Queen's for taking such good care of Harry," Okabe said.
