Former mayor, city council member joins Kauai mayoral race

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Former mayor and city council member JoAnn Yukimura has joined the race to become Kauai's next mayor.

Yukimura announced her plans to run for office Tuesday after serving as a Kauai council member from 1984 to 1988 and then again from 2002 until recently.

"I know that I can provide leadership to guide our way forward," Yukimura said in a news release.

Yukimura was mayor of Kauai from 1988 to 1994 and made history as the first Japanese-American woman to hold the mayor's seat in the United States.

The primary election is on August 11.
