WAIMALU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The public is advised to stay out of the Waimalu Stream following a spill of raw sewage.

Department of Health officials say 13,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from an manhole near the Hillside Terrace Four townhomes on Kaahumanu Street on Tuesday.

The sewage flowed through an area of brush and into the Waimalu Stream, which flows into Pearl Harbor, the DOH says.

Warning signs have been posted along the shoreline of Pearl Harbor fronting Neil Blaisdell Park and Harbor Center.

The DOH warns swimming in contaminated waters could lead to illnesses.

DOH officials say the spill was caused by a clogged pipe.

Health officials will continue to monitor the area.
