SOUTH POINT, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 23-year-old Peruvian man died Monday in waters off South Point on the Big Island.

Authorities say the man jumped into the water after a 20-year-old woman, also from Peru, got into trouble in an area known as "South Point Cliff Jump."

The two both had trouble due to currents, but the woman was able to get to shore while the man wasn't.

Rescue crews responded and were assisted by a nearby boater. A fire department diver later recovered the man's body in about 50 feet of water.

The man's identity is not being released, pending notification of family.

Big Island police said the cliff jump is popular on tourist and social media sites, but is not a safe place for jumping or diving.
