KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police say the suspected driver in a fatal Maui hit-and-run has turned himself in.

According to police, the driver turned himself in Tuesday around 6:30 p.m., 16 hours after the accident.

Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, MPD says a black 2013 Honda Civic four-door sedan made a left turn into a McDonald's parking lot. The vehicle hit the curb and struck a man, knocking him unconscious.

The man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. He has been identified as 57-year-old Robert Mercier, and is believed to have been homeless.

Immediately after the accident, witnesses reported multiple people exited the vehicle and fled before police arrived.

Police are still investigating if speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.

This is Maui County's first traffic fatality for 2018 compared to two the same time last year.
