Holiday parade through Waikiki to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Monday is a holiday for state and federal workers in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

An MLK Jr. Day parade sponsored by the Martin Luther King Coalition will begin at 9 a.m. It will feature 2,000 marchers, 100 vehicles, 20 floats and six marching bands.

The parade will begin at Ala Moana Park, head through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue, then finish at the Waikiki Shell parking lot at Kapiolani Park.

Lane closures will begin at 8 a.m.

On-street parking will be free for most parts of Oahu, contraflows won't be set up and street parking in Lanikai will be restricted.

All city emergency services will be available. Parks, municipal golf courses, botanical gardens and the Honolulu Zoo will be open. The city bus will also operate on a holiday schedule.
