Suspect in violent ATM robbery turns himself in, charged with assault

PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The man suspected of pushing an elderly man down and running off with his money from an ATM in early June has been charged.

Prosecutors charged 30-year-old Dayton Kaipo Laimana with assault instead of second-degree robbery after he allegedly used physical force to rob a 74-year-old man.

On June 2, surveillance cameras captured Laimana apparently standing behind the man at an ATM on Kamehameha Highway. Once the man's money is dispensed from the ATM, Laimana allegedly pushes the elderly man to the ground and runs off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m.

Laimana turned himself in to police Monday afternoon.

His bail is set at $2,000.
