HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 15 firefighters helped rescue a man who was stuck in a drainage ditch for hours in Hawaii Kai on Wednesday morning, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded around 3:35 a.m. after someone heard a man calling for help on Hawaii Kai Drive.

Firefighters said the man in his 30s was stuck in the drainage ditch and seemed confused. He couldn't tell firefighters how he got there in the first place, but did report being there for hours and trying to find his way out.

Firefighters had to cut through a grate to get to him. They managed to pull him to safety just before 6 a.m.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
