HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The mayor has appointed an engineer to fill the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation seat vacated by board Chairwoman Colleen Hanabusa.

Hanabusa resigned effective Friday to focus on her run for Congress.

Glenn M. Nohara was appointed to the remainder of her term, which runs through June 30, 2021.

Board members will vote to decide who should serve as chair.

Nohara currently serves as the chairman of the Koga Engineering and Construction board of directors. Previously, he was the company's president and chief operating officer.

He has also served on the boards of various community, business and engineering groups.

"Glenn's years of private sector engineering and construction experience, particularly in estimating construction costs for projects, give him the background and knowledge needed to oversee the rail project and carefully review costs before they are approved," Caldwell said, in a news release.

The appointment comes a day after a new interim executive director of HART was named. K.N. Murthy starts Dec. 5, and will serve for a year.
