MAKAWAO, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Old Haleakala Highway and Makawao Avenue was closed Saturday for nearly eight hours after a fatal crash involving four vehicles.

Maui police say a silver Nissan sedan was traveling up Haleakala Highway when it ran a red light at the intersection of Makani Road. The sedan collided with a white Toyota truck that was turning left on the Haleakala Highway from Makani Road. The Nissan then crossed the center line and collided into a stopped vehicle. The vehicle that was stopped in traffic collided into another vehicle stopped behind it.

"There was a lot of debris on the roadway. There was also an engine that was sitting outside on the road from a vehicle. I'm not sure which one," said Cymbree Glen who witnessed the crash.

The driver of the Toyota truck, a 63-year-old woman of Pukalani and her passenger, 57-year-old Traci Winegarner who is also from Pukalani both died at the scene. Winegarner was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

"You could see a mangled car in the center of the street and some cars over on the left and then a pileup of cars over on the right of just people who had stopped afterwards. You just think about those families and the people involved," Maui resident, Malika Dudley said.

The occupants of the other vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Speed is a suspected factor in the crash. Drugs and alcohol are also being investigated.
