KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An illegal swing at the summit of the Stairway to Heaven has been removed.

The swing itself was removed sometime early Tuesday, hours before a contracted crew arrived to take it down.

The crew then removed the large poles where the swing had been attached.

The Board of Water Supply had said it would cost $23,000 to take the swing down from the Stairway to Heaven, also known as Haiku Stairs. Officials didn't immediately say whether that cost estimate changed because the swing had previously been removed.

"The swing was an extremely dangerous attraction at Haiku Stairs that should never have been installed in the first place," said BWS Manager Ernest Lau.

The work to remove the swing started about 7:45 a.m., and wrapped up about 12:30 p.m.

A helicopter was used to transport staff to the summit, and remove the 30-foot poles.
