Local Connection: DOE Improvements
Aloha, I'm Tammi Chun, Assistant Superintendent at the Department of Education.
I'm also a public school graduate and the parent of a 10-year-old public school student. Education is at a critical turning point in Hawaii. In recent years, we've seen much progress. For example:
• More students are graduating from high school and enrolling in college
• Fewer students are absent and acting out
• Students are learning to a higher standard
• And, there's a commitment to Hawaiian education statewide
We also know there are areas that need improvement to help ALL students achieve: There is work to be done in overall performance to meet the needs and support learning of our high needs students. We also need adequate resources for classrooms and supports for schools.
As we work on new strategies, we're asking for everyone's help as we move forward.
We've heard from educators, students, parents, and lawmakers. We're gathering feedback until May 31st and we want to hear from many more.
Visit HawaiiPublicSchools.org and click on to the Strategic Plan where you can join the conversation on our blueprint for education. Together we will support all students in achieving their goals.
