HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police are on a manhunt after members of the specialized services division of the Honolulu Police Department discovered a suspicious, possibly explosive, device in a stolen BMW sedan that was involved in a crash on Tantalus Drive near Aaliamanu Place around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Captain Dave Jenkins with the Honolulu Fire Department says they were notified by Emergency Medical Services after the vehicle's OnStar-like system alerted them to the crash near 2892 Tantalus Drive.
"When they got on scene there were no patients inside," Jenkins said.
Jenkins said police are looking for possible occupants of the car after witnesses told firefighters that at least one person was seen leaving the vehicle holding what looked like a rifle.
Honolulu police are also investigating a suspected car break-in a mile away by two male suspects about 30 minutes later at Prospect and Puowaina Drive.
Police in patrol cars were searching the neighborhood with flash lights looking for any suspicious activity.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
