HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaiian Electric Company has lifted its call for customers to conserve energy, saying that normal electricity use can resume.
"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience and understanding," said HECO spokesman Darren Pai, in a news release. "With additional generators online, we expect to have sufficient power to meet our customers' needs. We do not expect to ask customers tomorrow to conserve power."
HECO asked Oahu customers to conserve energy during the evening peak demand period between 6 and 8 p.m. after weather conditions likely caused several generating units to unexpectedly go out of service. Generators at the independent power producer Kalaeloa Partners' plant, as well as at Hawaiian Electric's Kahe Generating Station and the City's H-Power plant have either been restored to service or are in the process of being restored. Other generating units were also brought online to help meet customers' power needs.
Some 60,000 customers lost power Friday morning following problems at power generators in West Oahu, likely caused by weather conditions.
The Hawaiian Electric Co. said power went out about 11 a.m. and was restored to most customers by about 12:35 p.m.
In a news release, HECO said lightning was reported in West Oahu about 11 a.m. and independent power producer Kalaeloa Partners subsequently lost power. Subsequently, three generating units at the Kahe power plant went out of service. The H-POWER plant also lost generating capacity.
Because of the problems, HECO put in place "targeted emergency outages" to avoid more widespread problems.
Outages were reported in multiple locations, including Pearl City, Aiea, Aina Haina, Laie, Salt Lake, Foster Village, Kaneohe, Kailua, Liliha, Enchanted Lakes, Makaha, and Wahiawa.
