WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who was killed in a pedestrian accident early Sunday has been identified, Big Island police said.

An autopsy on Wednesday determined that 38-year-old Jacob Freebairn died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Police said the Kamuela man was walking along the shoulder of Kawaihae Road in Waimea when a pickup truck veered across the roadway and hit him. He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck, 27-year-old BertJim Badua of Kapaau, was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and released pending investigation. Police believe alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.
