WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A male pedestrian died after he was hit by a pickup truck early Sunday in Waimea, Big Island police said.

Police said around 1:15 a.m., a Nissan Frontier was traveling west on Kawaihae Road near the Door of Faith church when it veered across the highway and hit the pedestrian.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been ordered to determine his identity and exact cause of death.

Police arrested the driver of the truck, 27-year-old BertJim Badua of Kapaau, on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide. He has been released pending investigation.

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is the first traffic fatality on the Big Island this year.
