HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - An investigation is underway on the Big Island following a police-involved shooting early Friday, authorities said.

The incident happened outside the McDonald's at the Puainako Center around 12:15 a.m.

Police said two people were shot with one female critically injured and another person dead at the scene.

Sources say the man who died was known to police and believed to have shot at officers before.

They also say he was a wanted fugitive, and had a long criminal record.

A witness on scene described seeing two officers in patrol cars in the area just prior to the shooting. He said he believed he heard at least a dozen shots fired.

Police are still processing the scene, and at last check, a portion of the shopping center was still closed off.

Details are limited at this time as Big Island police have not released further information.
