U.S. women's soccer friendly canceled because of turf conditions

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sunday's international soccer match at Aloha Stadium between the U.S. Women's National team and Trinidad and Tobago has been canceled.

The match has been called off due to unsafe field conditions. Following an open practice at Aloha Stadium Saturday morning, players expressed concern over the surface of the field .

The U.S. Women's National Team recently fought to play on grass fields during the 2015 Women's World Cup. However, the team members were scheduled to play most of their Victory Tour matches on turf fields.

It's an issue that's been frustrating for USWNT member and World Cup MVP Carli Lloyd. In an interview Saturday morning Lloyd said, "I'm very disappointed with the surface to be honest. I think coming to Hawaii is great and it's great to be able to play here, but when you take a look at the field it's just not good enough. We're playing eight out of our nine Victory Tour games on turf and it's honestly not good enough and we fought to not play a world cup on turf and now post World Cup, every venue we're playing at is a turf field. "

In a statement, Aloha Stadium Manager Scott Chan said, "We are extremely disappointed that this event will not take place at Aloha Stadium. We feel the people of Hawaii deserve to see an international soccer match of this caliber, however, we were unable to reach an agreement with U.S. Soccer to allow this event to happen."

According to a statement released by the soccer team, ticket holders will receive a full refund.
