KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - An 81-year-old pedestrian was killed early Tuesday after he was struck by a car in Kahului, according to the Maui Police Department.

The victim has been identified as Rusindo Cabo of Kahului.

Police said a 22-year-old man driving a silver 1998 Nissan Altima was traveling south on West Papa Avenue shortly before 6 a.m. when he struck Cabo, who was crossing near the intersection of Laau Street.

Cabo was in a marked crosswalk at the time, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was wearing her seat belt and was not injured in the collision.

Police are still investigating whether speed, drugs and alcohol were factors.

This is Maui County's 21st traffic fatality for 2015 as compared to 19 at this time last year.
