HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 48-year-old man accused of killing a woman and dumping her body in Waikiki in 2013 was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison.
Joseph Kahawai, who has an extensive criminal record, is accused of killing Janine Meyer, 51, and placing her body in a dumpster behind a low rise condo. He is believed to have met the victim at a homeless shelter where she lived, and according to police sources, was seen on surveillance video in the dumpster before her body was discovered there.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner determined that Meyer died of asphyxiation.
Kahawai was initially charged with murder, but a plea deal that was endorsed by Meyers' family allowed Kahawai to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter if he agreed to serve the full 20 years in prison.
