Doctor Wynn Okuda, a dental expert, compared silver versus tooth colored fillings. He said that if your silver fillings are more than 15 years old, they may be fractured, corroded or leaking. That can cause gum inflammation and decay. You should also worry about a mercury allergy or sensitivity that can be caused by these silver fillings. A tip from him: if the silver has turned black, go to your dentist immediately.
Dr. Okuda also recommends tooth colored fillings instead because he said you remove less of the healthy tooth to put in the filling. It has a better seal, blends more naturally and has no mercury content. He also notes that the strength and sensitivity of your tooth is improved.
