The word hanapa'a means to make secure of fasten. In Hawaiian, the word hanapa'a is not specifically related to fishing rather it can be used to describe many things being secured or fastened. Today, the word hanapa'a has become a slang largely used by local fishermen to signify that they have a fish on their line. The fishermen yell "hanapa'a" and all the other fishermen know what to do.
