No July 4th fireworks for Hawaii Kai, again
HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - For the second year, there will be no fireworks celebration on the 4th of July at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai.
Fundraising for the community event fell short again, according to Maunalua Communities Foundation, sponsors of Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Festival.
Even with holdover donations from the canceled 2014 event and new donations this year, funding was $35,000 short, according to organizers.
“We appreciate the support of the community,” said Dianne Glei, IDMBF chair. “They have supported us the last two years with donations ranging from coins and dollars in a drop box to $2,000 checks. Unfortunately, that only adds up to about $5,000.
“We also are grateful to the Hawaii Kai businesses that made sponsor donations including Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association, Koko Marina Center, East Oahu Realty. What we needed were donors who could give $5,000, $10,000 or an angel donor to fund the fireworks. “
This would have been the seventh Fourth of July event in Hawaii Kai. “We are sorry to disappoint the community. We know they enjoy this event,” added Glei.
