A Hana man is hospitalized after he fell 200 feet down a cliff near Kauiki Hill on Maui. Kauiki Hill is located on the right side of Hana Bay
At about 4:52 p.m., the Maui Police and Fire Department responded to a call from a man who was with the victim at the time of the incident. Fire personnel were able to hike down Kauiki Hill into a homeless camp where they located the victim, a 31-year-old homeless man.
The victim was suffering from an open head wound and what police described as "altered mental status."
Upon initial contact with fire personnel, the victim was very combative and refused all help. Due to safety concerns and the risk of injury to first responders it was determined that Maui Police patrol personnel from the Hana district would be flown into the camp site with fire personnel.
The victim eventually calmed down and agreed to be airlifted out of the campsite to Hana Ball Field where he was treated by medics and later taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center by medevac. Meanwhile, MFD personnel flew back to the homeless camp to extract the first responders and transport them to the Hana Ball Field.
Police say the man's injuries are non-life threatening.
