HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has landed a leading role in the highly anticipated Disney animated film, 'Moana'.

He made the announcement Wednesday on Instagram, saying he signed on to voice and sing for the leading male in the upcoming film, which is about a Polynesian girl named Moana. The title character sets off in an ancient south Pacific world called "Oceania". The story follows her on an action-packed voyage to find a fabled island. Along the way, she teams up with the demi-god, Maui, who will be voiced by The Rock.

Filmmakers are the same team behind 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin'. John Musker and Ron Clements said they made several trips to Hawaii when planning the film, seeking insight into how growing up surrounded by an ocean affects a person's point of view.

'Moana' is scheduled to hit theaters in late 2016.
