KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Fire Department rescued five hikers Monday morning who were trapped near the off-limits Stairway to Heaven trail that was damaged by a small landslide during Saturday's severe weather.
HFD said the hikers -- four females and one male -- started their hike at noon on Sunday in the Moanalua Valley and ended up getting stuck on the Kaneohe side of the ridge.
HFD received a call at around 7:15 p.m. and dispatched four units and 12 personnel; however, it was too dark to continue the search. The hikers, who had cell phones, spent the night near the trail.
Firefighters resumed their search early Monday morning at around 6:30 a.m. and rescued the hikers at around 8:20.
No injuries were reported.
Several stairs and railings were damaged in a small landslide on Saturday.
