MAKAPUU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A highly popular East Oahu hike will be closed weekdays through Thursday, March 5, beginning Monday.

Officials say, it'll be worth it.

The Makapu'u lighthouse trail will be getting a significant facelift. The six-month, 2.7 million dollar renovation will include repaving the trail, replacing culverts, and enhancing the top two lookouts.

Additionally, four small lookout areas with seating, interpretive signs and viewing scopes will be installed along the makai side of the trail to enhance the experience for users.

After March 5th, the DLNR says it will try to keep one side of the trail open for weekday use.

"Once we re-open, we want everyone to be cautious and aware that there will be construction work going on during the weekdays while they're hiking in" said State Parks Administrator Dan Quinn.

Another full closure is tentatively planned for the last week of July.
