WAIMANALO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Crews have completed repairs to a sinkhole that closed a portion of Kalanianaole Highway Thursday afternoon.

The sinkhole opened up near Mekia Street near the L&L Drive Inn around 4 p.m. and caused a huge traffic backup during the evening commute.

State crews began responding around 3:45 p.m., but the excavator didn't arrive until almost six hours later.

The Board of Water Supply said the hole did not impact any of its water lines, but it may be connected to a city sewage line.

Honolulu police reopened Kalanianaole Highway at Mekia Street at approximately 4 a.m. Friday.
