Transformer explosion knocks out power to Maui customers

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A transformer explosion on Wakea Avenue has caused a widespread power outage, according to officials on Maui.
Maui Electric said the outage -- which happened shortly before 10 a.m. -- affected customers in Kahului, Waihee, Waikapu and Wailuku. Crews are currently on scene making repairs.
According to county officials, power has already come back on for some areas. The outage also affected the county's service center at the Maui Mall.
Officials advise driving with caution as some traffic lights may be out.
