Man dies after hit by car in Kalihi Valley

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man is dead and a driver arrested after a fatal pedestrian accident in Kalihi Valley.
According to Honolulu police, the collision took place at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators said 24-year-old Tui Isaia was driving southbound on Kalihi Street near Manaiki Place when he struck the 38-year-old male pedestrian.
Police said the driver knew he had hit something but didn't know it was a person until he pulled over several yards later at Nalanieha Street. He was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide following the crash.
Investigators also said the pedestrian appeared to be crouching in the roadway when he was hit. There is no crosswalk at Manaiki Place.
Nalanieha Street was closed between Kalihi Street and Likelike Highway, and Kalihi Street was closed in both directions between Anuu Street and Manaiki Place during the police investigation.
Speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.
