He is too cool for school.

"Mr. Floro is a cool teacher because he always helps me when I have problems to talk about," said Mikaela Rivera, a Washington Middle School eighth grader. "He is very understanding and trustworthy."

Rivera nominated her math teacher Eric Floro for the Cool Teacher Contest, an online contest sponsored by KFVE The Home Team and Hawaii Hyundai Dealers. His coolness was certified when he was named the winner.

"I was really honored because I know that there's a lot of great teachers here at Washington and across the state, but with students like Mikaela, it makes it really easy for us to do what we do as teachers," said Floro.

Floro is the second recipient of this award and along with teaching math he coaches the school's chess and cross country team.

But there were actually two winners in this contest. Floro received a check for $500 for school supplies, and Rivera received a $250 gift card.

The checks were presented by Andrew Lee of Tony Hyundai, Wil Okabe of the Hawaii State Teachers Association and John Fink of K5.
