Video capturing spontaneous tribute goes viral

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - It is a video that has gone viral, California runners taking a spontaneous detour from a race to shake the hand of a 95-year-old World War II veteran.

Joe Bell was watching Sunday's San Jose 408K Race while wearing his World War II uniform when runners went off course to say thank you.

The 8-kilometer race benefits the Pat Tillman Foundation.

Patrick Tillman was an NFL all- star who left behind a $3.6 million contract  to fight for his country after the attacks of Sept. 11. He died in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

The Foundation funds scholarships for military veterans and their spouses.

Bell told local media that he was shocked as the runners thanked him.

The touching tribute was captured by Julia Prodis Sulek of the San Jose Mercury News.
