HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The undeveloped parcel of land at the intersection of Hawaii Kai Drive and Keahole Street is familiar to all who frequent the area.
That's because there's a big green wall surrounding it.
It's been that way for years. The land, slated to be developed by Korean owners for luxury condominiums, is now on its third developer.
The Avalon Group has been tabbed for the project. Greg Knudsen, Chair of the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board has been in touch with the firm.
"The project will be somewhat similar to what was proposed before, but not quite as high scale...which might be good. The community is always looking for more affordable housing".
The Avalon Group said it plans to put affordable housing on site. The previous plan would have it be at a different location. Additionally, there are plans to preserve and care for a piece of land adjacent the construction area that has cultural and historic significance.
Knudsen says while that news is good, it will require more patience from all in the community.
"It's likely there's going to be major revisions and if there are major revisions it needs to go back through some of the permitting process. So we would expect that this will be the start of another fairly drawn out process".
